SOLUTION
"It
is quite clear that as long as the nations of the world
spend most of their energy, money, and emotional strength
in quarreling with words and weapons, a true offensive
against the common problems that threaten human survival
is not very likely. A world government that can channel
human efforts in the direction of the great solutions
seems desirable, even essential. Naturally, such a world
government should be a federal one, with regional and
local autonomy safeguarded and with cultural diversity
promoted."

Asimov |

What my experience has taught me is that regardless
of how complicated the problems might appear, it is
possible to work through them and find solutions that
are mutually satisfactory to every stakeholder in
the problem… most of our problems on this earth are
created by us and therefore we have the capacity and
the obligation to unmake them.

"The
problem of climate change is so large that it can't
be solved by voluntary individual responses. It requires
an economy-wide solution, i.e. one that limits the

I
know that government doesn't have the all solutions that
real solutions do not come from the top down.
Instead, the ways to end poverty come from all of us. We
are part of the solution.
-- Governor Kathleen Blanco
Think
about it: Every educated person is not rich, but almost
every education person has a job and a way out of poverty.
So education is a fundamental solution to poverty.
-- Governor Kathleen Blanco
When
we talk of flood control, we usually think of dams and deeper
river channels, to impound the waters or hurry their run-off.
Yet neither is the ultimate solution, simply because floods
are caused by the flow of water downhill. If the hills are
wooded, that flow is checked. If there is a swamp at the
foot of the hills, the swamp sponges up most of the excess
water, restores some of it to the underground water supply
and feeds the remainder slowly into the streams. Strip the
hills, drain the boglands, and you create flood conditions
inevitably. Yet that is what we have been doing for years.
-- Hal Borland

"Is it too late to prevent us from self-destructing?
No, for we have the capacity to design our own future,
to take a lesson from living things around us and
bring our values and actions in line with ecological
necessity. But we must first realize that ecological
and social and economic issues are all deeply intertwined.
There can be no solution to one without a solution
to the others."
~ Jean-Michel
Cousteau

The
biggest problem is getting beyond the “you can’t”
syndrome. The moment you figure that out, you’re on
your way to flying. Anyone who cannot see problems
around him or herself is utterly blind. All the problems
sitting there are an invitation for you to be creative,
make use of your skills and resources and find a solution.
Of course you can do it. It doesn’t require brilliance.
It’s just giving yourself permission and then being
persistent. Persistent in seeing the problem or opportunity
and persistent in thinking about it until you have
come up with some interesting ideas that might change
the pattern. It’s really a mindset, not anything in
the objective world — that is the problem.

Drayton

The
most constructive solutions are those which take into
consideration the views of all persons involved and
are acceptable to all. Such outcomes are the result
of negotiation strategies where the needs of both
sides are considered important and an attempt is made
to meet all needs. These solutions are appropriately
called Win-Win because there are no losers. While
often difficult to arrive at, the process leading
to such solutions builds interpersonal relationships,
increases motivation and improves commitment. Win-Win
solutions are the most desirable outcomes of conflict
resolution.
-- Peter Gabor and Carol Ing

"When
we bear witness, when we become the situation — homelessness,
poverty, illness, violence, death — the right action
arises by itself. We don’t have to worry about what
to do. We don't have to figure out solutions ahead
of time. Peacemaking is the functioning of bearing
witness. Once we listen with our entire body and mind,
loving action arises.
-- Bernie
Glassman

The
full extent of the problem of hunger is not obvious
to most of us. We see the homeless, but there are
a great number of working poor, struggling to survive,
who don't have enough money to put adequate food on
the table. We must find a solution to this ever-increasing
problem — and quickly.

There
are many challenges facing the international community
today but few, in my mind, are more pressing than
those of finding humanitarian solutions to refugee
problems. We talk of regional conflicts, of economic
and social crises, of political instability, of abuses
of human rights, of racism, religious intolerance,
inequalities between rich and poor, hunger, over-population,
under-development and. I could go on and on. Each
and every one of these impediments to humanity’s pursuit
of well-being are also among the root causes of refugee
problems.

Hartling, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, 1978-1985

"Unlike
plagues of the dark ages or contemporary diseases we
do not understand, the modern plague of overpopulation

its victim."

"We
have the opportunity to make violence prevention and
peacemaking a central conversation in our culture
right now. And there couldn't be a more urgent time
to do so. We see daily the tragic impact violence
is having on the planet. I feel heartened that so
many practical solutions will be brought forth through
a Department of Peace. This campaign is showing what
can be done as we begin to invest more in the work
of peacebuilding. There are many programs and practices
that are already proving to be incredibly effective
at reducing such cultural challenges as gang violence,
violence in our schools, in our homes, as well as
conflict around the world. So please join this movement
by contacting your members of Congress and urge them
to support this landmark legislation. And join others
in your community working to make it happen. Together
we can do this." -- Willie

"Refugee
problems may often seem intractable but they are not
insoluble. In our experience there are two basic prerequisites
for solution: the political will of leaders to tackle
the causes and to settle for peace, and international
determination to push for peace and then to consolidate
it. Consolidating peace means helping societies emerging
from war to reintegrate refugees in safety and dignity,
to rebuild their institutions - including in the field
of justice and human rights - and to resume their
economic development."

We
are recycling not only to protect the environment, but for
economic reasons as well. Disposal is simply too costly

Conflicts
are a normal part of life; how we deal with them can
make a big difference. Often when people resolve conflicts,
one person ends up a winner, and one loses out. This
may solve the problem for the moment, but resentment
and bad feelings can cause more problems later. Another
way to look at conflicts is to try to find a WIN-WIN
solution, a compromise in which both sides can benefit.
In this way, conflicts are turned into opportunities
to grow and make things better. This approach is the
cornerstone of "conflict resolution" - an important
tool for bringing peace into our personal lives, our
communities and to our world.

Alan Silverstein

This
is the one international institution we have in which
governments get together to work collectively for
a common purpose. International crises, by definition,
require international solutions. Peacekeeping is a
response to conflict, is a response to situations
in which often it is not the business of any one particular
country to get into. It seems to me, therefore, that
the world will for the foreseeable future need peacekeeping.
