SADNESS
Sadness
is a natural reaction to awakening to see the way
things are. But we can either become lost in our sadness,
or decide to use this awakening to inspire us to work
to change things to the way we wish they could be.

Alan Silverstein

"Living
the truth in your heart without compromise brings kindness
into the world.
Attempts at kindness that compromise your heart cause only
sadness."
-- Anonymous 18th century monk

The
sad truth is that most evil is done by people who
never make up their minds to be either good or evil.
-- Hannah
Arendt

The
saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers
knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.

I
really believe that all of us have a lot of darkness
in our souls. Anger, rage, fear, sadness. I don't
think that's only reserved for people who have horrible
upbringings. I think it really exists and is part
of the human condition. I think in the course of your
life you figure out ways to deal with that.
-- Kevin
Bacon

"Can
I see another's woe, and not be in sorrow too?
Can I see another's grief, and not seek for kind relief?"
-- William Blake
“So
much sadness exists in the world
that we are all under obligation to contribute as much joy
as lies within our powers.”
-- John Sutherland Bonnell
“You
cannot prevent the birds of sadness from passing over your
head,
but you can prevent their making a nest in your hair”
-- Chinese Proverb
Being
myself animated by feelings of affection toward my fellowmen,
I am saddened by the modern system of advertising. Whatever
evidence it offers of enterprise, ingenuity, impudence,
and resource in certain individuals, it proves to my mind
the wide prevalence of that form of mental degradation which
is called gullibility."
-- Joseph Conrad
Music
is amazing. There's some metaphysical comfort where it allows
you to be isolated and alone while telling you that you
are not alone... truly, the only cure for sadness is to
share it with someone else.
-- Wayne Coyne
"In the presence of nature, a wild delight runs through
the man, in spite of real sorrows."
~ Ralph
Waldo Emerson

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there
is hatred, let me sow love: where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair,
hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there
is sadness, joy.
-- Saint
Francis of Assisi |
“One
cannot be deeply responsive to the world without being saddened
very often.”
-- Erich Fromm
No society
has been able to abolish human sadness,
no political system can deliver us from the pain of living,
from our fear of death, our thirst for the absolute.
It is the human condition that directs the social condition,
not vice versa.
-- Eugene Ionesco
"Be
happy. Talk happiness. Happiness calls out responsive
gladness in others. There is enough sadness in the world
without yours.... never doubt the excellence and permanence
of what is yet to be. Join the great company of those
who make the barren places of life fruitful with kindness....
Your success and happiness lie in you.... The great
enduring realities are love and service.... Resolve
to keep happy and your joy and you shall form an invincible
host against difficulties.
-- Helen
Keller

One
must not let oneself be overwhelmed by sadness.
-- Jackie Kennedy
"You
see all these things that make you feel desperate
or sad, but you realize changes can be made, and it
doesn't take a lot of money on our part to make a
change in people's lives."
-- John
Legend

then I have at least accomplished something in my
life."

“Every
man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not;
and often times we call a man cold when he is only sad.”
-- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
"EARTH
DAY uses one of humanity’s great discoveries, the
discovery of anniversaries by which, throughout time,
human beings have kept their sorrows and their joys,
their victories, their revelations and their obligations
alive, for re-celebration and re-dedication another
year, another decade, another century, another eon.

Margaret
Mead

"I always try to see things with children's eyes.
Are they happy? Sad? What do they need? Everywhere
I went, I realized that children are society's victims
… We have a duty to speak to political leaders, to
influence people to give these children a better future."
-- Nana
Mouskouri

Race
is the great taboo in our society. We are afraid to
talk about it. White folks fear their unspoken views
will be deemed racist. People of color are filled
with sorrow and rage at unrighted wrongs. Drowning
in silence, we are brothers and sisters drowning each
other. Once we decide to transform ourselves from
fearful caterpillars into courageous butterflies,
we will be able to bridge the racial gulf and move
forward together towards a bright and colorful future.

Paterson

Don't
Make Assumptions. Find the courage to ask questions and
to express what you really want. Communicate with others
as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness
and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely
transform your life.
-- Miguel Angel Ruiz
Live
by this credo:
have a little laugh at life and look around you for happiness
instead of sadness.
Laughter has always brought me out of unhappy situations.
-- Red Skelton
Courage,
it would seem, is nothing less than the power to overcome
danger, misfortune, fear, injustice, while continuing to
affirm inwardly that life with all its sorrows is good;
that everything is meaningful even if in a sense beyond
our understanding; and that there is always tomorrow.
-- Dorothy Thompson
"We,
the peoples of the United Nations, determined to save
succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which
twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to
mankind, and to reaffirm faith in fundamental human
rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person,
in the equal right of men and women and of nations
large and small....And for these ends to practice
tolerance and live together in peace with one another
as good neighbors...have resolved to combine our efforts
to accomplish these aims."
-- Preamble, Charter of the United Nations.

“When
I see brokenness, poverty and crime in inner cities,
I also see the enormous potential and readiness for
transformation and rebirth. We are creating an art
form that comes from the heart and reflects the pain
and sorrow of people's lives. It also expresses joy,
beauty, and love. This process lays the foundation
of building a genuine community in which people are
reconnected with their families, sustained by meaningful
work, nurtured by the care of each other and will
together raise and educate their children. Then we
witness social change in action.”
