CORPORATE
PERSONHOOD
...corporate
personhood is a real scandal...the meaning of the
14th Amendment was expanded so that 'person' included
corporations, and over the years corporations have
gotten rights that are way beyond those of persons
of flesh and blood...there's plenty of anti-corporate
feeling in the country but it's unfocused... a constitutional
amendment would be a great idea... there has to
be a lot of organizing and educational work to build
up a major groundwell of support which will call
for restoring the 14th Amendment to what the words
say...the idea that a corporation should be given
personal rights is a major attack on classical liberal
doctrines which held that rights inhere in 'persons'
- persons of flesh and blood, not collectivist legal
entities established by state power...

This
is a crucial time in the fight for corporate civil
rights. Just look at the hateful signs at Occupy
Wallstreet: 'Corporations Are Not People!' Wow,
I thought we were past the point in this country
where some people aren't people just because they
have different color skin or different religion
or were born in a lawyer's office, only exist on
paper, have no soul and can never die. -- Stephen
Colbert
“Let
freedom ka-ching...Corporations do everything people
do except breathe, die and go to jail for dumping
1.3 million pounds of PCBs in the Hudson River.
-- Stephen
Colbert
Corporations
have free speech, but they can't speak like you
and me. They don't have mouths or hands ...(Just
A Giant Middle Finger) -- Stephen
Colbert
Citizens
United said that transparency would be the disinfectant,
but (c)(4)’s are warm, wet, moist incubators. There
is no disinfectant. -- Stephen
Colbert

It's
time for us to review the circumstances under which
corporations gain rights superior to that of individuals
in our society. It's time for us to look at the practices
of corporations and holding them accountable for violations
of law which often go unnoticed because there is very
little regulation.

You
can't have a people's democracy as long as corporations
are considered people.
-- Bill
Moyers
“Capitalism
is out of control, thanks in no small part to Citizens
United, the Supreme Court decision which said that
a corporation is a person, even though it doesn't
eat, drink, make love, sing, raise children or take
care of aging parents. You can't have a people's democracy
as long as corporations are considered people.”

You

I
still do not understand how a corporation can have person-hood
if it has no soul and never dies.
