PEACE BELL RINGING
Each year the International Day of Peace is launched at the United Nations with a minute of silence and the ringing of the Peace Bell. (www.un.org/events/peaceday)
UNITED NATIONS OBSERVANCE
Each year an event involving hundreds of children takes place at the United Nations, coordinated by the UN Department of Public Information and the UN CyberSchoolBus in collaboration with a number of NGOs. A video-conference links young people in many other countries as well and the program is webcast live on the Internet. UNESCO PRIZE FOR PEACE EDUCATION
Sri Lankan judge Christopher Gregory Weeramantry will be awarded the $40,000 UNESCO Prize for Peace Education on 21 September at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on the occasion of the International Day of Peace.

The 4th Annual Global Peace Film Festival opens Sept. 14, 2006, and runs through Sept. 21st, 2006. INTERFAITH COOPERATION FOR PEACE
Many Peace Day events and activities have an interfaith component such as those coordinated by United Religions Initiative Cooperation Circles and at World Peace Prayer Society's flag ceremonies and peace pole dedications. A high level conference on interfaith cooperation for peace is being organized on Peace Day by the Tripartite Forum for Interfaith Cooperation for Peace, consisting of 50 governments, 15 UN agencies and 110 religious NGOs.

DECLARATION OF PEACE
The Declaration of Peace is a nationwide campaign to establish by September 21, 2006 a concrete and rapid plan for peace in Iraq, including: a prompt timetable for withdrawal of troops and closure of bases; a peace process for security, reconstruction, and reconciliation and the shift of funding for war to meeting human needs. FAST FOR PEACE
As part of the Troops Home Fast campaign, Cindy Sheehan, Code Pink, Gold Star Families for Peace and Global Exchange launched a rolling program of fasts on July 4. So far more than 3000 activists, politicians and celebrities such as Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon, Danny Glover, Bonnie Raitt and Willie Nelson have joined the fast. September 11, 2006 is the 100th Anniversary of Mohandas K. Gandhi's decision to seek justice through nonviolence and civil disobedience.
