Zora Neale Hurston was an author during the time of the Harlem Renaissance, best known for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, which Oprah Winfrey made into a movie in 2005. She died penniless and forgotten for her literary works. But a decade after her death, author Alice Walker wrote an article about her in Ms Magazine which helped bring her works back into public attention as an important insight into the African American experience. Today she is recognized as the “foremother” of a generation of black American women writers.
