International Day of Peace Celebrated at the University of Saint Francis

with a Candlelit Procession and Vigil on September 21

September 13, 2005, Fort Wayne, Indiana: Just Peace, a peace and justice group of the University of Saint Francis, will host a candlelight vigil commemorating the U.N. International Day of Peace, on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at 7 p.m. The program will begin at the peace pole located on the East Campus near the Doermer Family Center for Health Science Education, include a candlelit procession across the causeway of Mirror Lake, and conclude at the bronze sculpture of Saint Francis near the Bass Mansion.

In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating September 21st of each year as an International Day of Peace. The intention is to have the entire world observe a day of peace and nonviolence in which all peoples and organizations would commemorate the day in an appropriate manner.

An increasing number of people worldwide from many faith and spiritual traditions have committed to the task of working toward the following objective: “To encourage worldwide, 24-hour spiritual observations for peace and nonviolence on the International Day of Peace, September 21, 2005 in every house of worship and place of spiritual practice, by all religious and spiritually based groups and individuals, and by all men, women and children who seek peace in the world.”

This global 24-hour spiritual observation for peace is meant to demonstrate the power of prayer and other spiritual practices in promoting peace and preventing violent conflict. These worldwide spiritual observances will also help raise public awareness of the International Day of Peace and directly support the establishment of a global ceasefire.

The public and media are invited. For additional information, phone Barbara O’Connor at (260) 434-3252.

The University of Saint Francis, founded in 1890, is a comprehensive university in the Catholic Franciscan tradition, offering undergraduate and graduate programs to more than 2,000 students from a broad geographic region.
