September 9, 2004 - Pax Christi of the Alleghenies Young Adult Forum to Celebrate

International Day of Peace

CRESSON, Pa. - Pax Christi of the Alleghenies Young Adult Forum is dedicating a Peace Pole at Saint Francis University on September 21 to celebrate the International Day of Peace. The International Day of Peace was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 in order to "commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples." The goal for this year's observance is that one billion people all over the globe will join in a common commitment to peace.

"When our world seems to be caught in the vicious cycle of the forces of violence, it is critical that we collectively use the power of prayer to bring about peace and goodwill among all people on earth," commented Sr. Veronica Kovach, campus minister at Mount Aloysius College and member of Pax Christi.

The dedication will begin at 7:00 P.M. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at Saint Francis University and will include readings, prayer, music and a candlelight procession to the Peace Pole. The Peace Pole will be permanently installed on the mall and will carry the message "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in 8 languages. Light refreshments will be served to close the celebration. All members of the community are invited to attend.

Pax Christi of the Alleghenies Young Adult Forum includes members from Saint Francis University, Penn State Altoona College, University at Pittsburgh at Johnstown, Mount Aloysius College, and community members.
