South Africa International Day of Peace Celebration 21st September

In keeping with a tradition I initiated last year to involve school participation on the International Day of Peace, we celebrated this day at Laudium High School near Pretoria. Last year, 2003, the International Day of Peace was celebrated at Task Academy High School, where the pupils participated in a Peace Prayer Ceremony and a Peace Pole was planted.

At
Laudium High School this year, the children were addressed by myself and various senior members of the community on peace issues. Emphasis was placed on the importance of changing the mindset of humanity from that of a culture of violence and retaliation to one of cooperation, mutual respect for all life and differences and balancing material and spiritual values. It was pointed out that 10 years ago South Africa chose the way of a Culture of Peace when these principles were applied to formulate the new Constitution and New South Africa.

Representing the various cultural groups in the multicultural school, a Tamil Priest, an Islamic Imam and a Catholic Bishop all participated in the planting and blessing of the Peace Pole.

The occasion generated a profound sense of Unity in Diversity, reflecting in the multicultural school as a microcosm of our world’s humanity.

In the evening another Peace Pole was planted and dedicated in a private garden in
Pretoria. 30 People attended this very joyous event.
