(2003 World Peace Prayer Society Report)

BULAWAYO, ZIMBABWE

Rt. Rev. Helmut Reckter

In the Diocese of Chinhoyi, hundreds of people from all walks of life gathered at St. Peter's Parish to commemorate the International Day of Peace. The concelebrated mass was led by Rt. Rev. Helmut Reckter, The Bishop of Chinhoyi. The preacher invited the congregation to reflect on the issues that have caused disharmony in our beloved and sad country, Zimbabwe. As the preacher enumerated the real issues that have led to economic and political decline in the country, faces of surprised people could be noticed. The reason for their reaction being that due to the breakdown of rule of law in Zimbabwe, people don't speak about human rights abuses by the government in public.

Indeed the celebrations were an entry point for many people who have always believed that politics and the Church are incomparable elements. From the Peace Day, people in the diocese of Chinhoyi are beginning to appreciate that church speaks for the oppressed.
