JAPAN
(2003 World Peace Prayer Society Report)

TOKYO, JAPAN

Sunday September 21, 2003

About 150 volunteers of the Goi Peace Foundation and their friends gathered at the UNIC in Aoyama Tokyo under typhoon conditions at
2 PM.

Mr. Pete Deguchi explained about the International Day of Peace promoted by the UN, the involvement of The World Peace Prayer Society NY at the UN in NY and the IDP programs by volunteers all over the world.

We cheered and reassured ourselves that what we were doing was important for peace.

The police car guided the front and behind the lines of Peace Walk. They were surprised to know that we are allowed by UNIC to use their land as the gathering point, since it is normally not permitted to use this place. This time, UNIC allowed us to use this place because we were promoting the International Day of Peace.

We walked down the route 264, a major route across the
Tokyo from UNIC to the entrance of Omote-sando. Omote-sando means Main Road for Shrine and this one is for the Meiji Shrine that the Meiji Emperor symbolized. Along 246 and Omote-Sando, there are many fashionable and exotic stores such as clothing, dining, gallery and café. So it is a kind of hot area in Tokyo.  We expected many young people to watch us and our banner “May Peace Prevail on Earth International Day of Peace,” but there weren’t many because of the typhoon.

After 10 minutes walking, our legs and feet were soaking wet because of the storm instead of our rain gear. We walked doing a World Peace Prayer Ceremony, raising small paper flags in our hands while occasionally explaining IDP.  Yes, a lot of flags fell off the sticks because of the rain, but we all collected them.

We passed the Harajuku Train Station and turned toward
Yoyogi ParkYoyogi Park is the big park next to Meiji Shrine. After 10 minutes walk from Harajuku station, we reached a square near Yoyogi Park, near the National TV, and that was our goal. We thanked the police and thanked each other.
