Heroes for a Better World

Willie Nelson
(1933-)

birthdate: April 30
birthplace:
Abbott, Texas

Willie Nelson is an American icon with a string of #1 Country albums and hits over his 50 year music career, and a high profiled connection to many causes for a more peaceful, just and sustainable world. In 1985, Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp organized the Farm Aid concert to raise awareness about the rapidly spreading loss of family owned farms across America and to help raise funds for families to be able to keep their farms. Farm Aid has raised $29 million since then to help American family farms. In 2004, Willie Nelson and his wife Annie began promoting biodiesel, made from vegetable oil, as a more sustainable cleaner fuel. The next year they cofounded Willie Nelson Biodiesel (BioWillie), a company that supplies Biodiesel fuel to truck stops. In 2004, Willie Nelson supported the campaign of the "Peace Candidate" Congressman Dennis Kucinich for President, appearing at events and composing the song, "Whatever Happened to Peace on Earth" for the campaign. In 2007 his icon status was enshrined when Ben & Jerry's released a new ice cream flavor -- Willie Nelson's Country Peach Cobbler Ice Cream, with all of the proceeds donated to Farm Aid.
