Heroes for a Better World

Jean-Michel Cousteau
(1938-)

French Environmentalist, Explorer

birthdate: May 6
birthplace:
Toulon, France

Jean-Michel began exploring the underwater world at the age of seven with his famous father Jacques. He continued diving the world's oceans from the famous Calypso ship with his father and his family throughout his childhood and teen years, but also graduated from the Paris School of Architecture in 1964. True to his father's desire that he "carry forward the flames of his faith", Jean-Michel started the Ocean Futures Society in 1999, a non-profit marine conservation and education organization. He has also produced over 70 films and, like his father, won many awards for them including the television Emmy and the Cable Ace Award. On Earth Day in 1997, Jean-Michel celebrated the International Year of the Reef by leading the first undersea live, video internet chat from the coral reefs of Fiji. In 2002, he was chosen to be the first person ever to represent the environment at the opening ceremonies of the Olympics and now devotes time to the eco-friendly, ocean-oriented, and culturally appropriate Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort hotel.
