The
Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism was established in 1986 to promote
humanitarianism by recognizing individuals who have contributed to humanity and
the environment. Established by Albert Toepfer, the Prize is given by John Hopkins
University under the auspices of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in New
York. In 1989 the Albert Schweitzer Gold Medal for Humanitarianism was also established.
